Council supports nationwide initiative to help improve the environment

Published Thursday, 07 March 2019

Residents in East Northamptonshire are being invited to join the rest of the UK to take part in a nationwide event between 22 March and 23 April 2019 to help remove litter from our streets.

The Great British Spring Clean, a campaign created by Keep Britain Tidy, is calling on ‘Litter Heroes’ across the country to help improve the environment on their doorstep.

Aiming to inspire 500,000 people to join forces - in partnership with community organisations, businesses and the government - to collect and safely dispose of litter from our streets, parks and beaches, recycling as much as possible.

Cllr Steven North, Leader of East Northamptonshire Council and Vice-Chairman of the Northamptonshire Waste Partnership said:

“Litter blights our environment and costs the tax payer money. East Northamptonshire Council is keen for community groups to take part in the Great British Spring Clean and we look forward to helping as many groups as possible to a create a cleaner East Northamptonshire.

“Our waste team will be assisting communities and I urge them to sign up online and take part in what I’m sure will be the first of many initiatives to improve where we live, work and play.”

Charlotte Tompkins, Waste Manager adds:

“We’ve already had a great response to the campaign with community groups requesting the loan of our litter picking equipment. In fact, the first three weekends are already full, so if you are organising a litter-pick from weekend Saturday, 13 April, please get in touch.

“We support community litter picks all year around and there is no need to wait for a big campaign to get involved. The waste team will be happy to assist with organising events at any time of the year, so there is plenty of time to get involved”
