Freedom’s fresh-air-fitness

Published Thursday, 12 April 2018

This spring is the perfect time to get a bit fitter in the great East Northamptonshire outdoors, thanks to a new activity programme from your local leisure provider.

The Active Communities team at Freedom Leisure, the company that manages the district’s swimming pools and leisure centres on behalf of East Northamptonshire Council, has organised a host of activities for all ages to enjoy, starting this month.

Have you ever wondered what the outdoor gyms are like at your local park but not had the confidence to try them out? Now’s your chance to give the equipment a go with your very own Freedom Leisure fitness buddy.

You can take advantage of these free gym sessions in Raunds and Thrapston every Wednesday (starting 18 April) from 9.30-10.30am at Bassford's Recreational Ground in Raunds (Marshall's Road, NN9 6EY) and from 11-12pm at Chancery Lane in Thrapston (next to "The Meadows surgery" NN14 4QL).

These are not personal training sessions or instructor led, but offer a fitness buddy friend to accompany you. Don’t forget, the outdoor gyms can be enjoyed 24/7 on your own or with friends.

If you’re looking for family fun, the Xplorer treasure hunt might be for you. Drop by Rushden’s Spencer Park after school, grab a map for just £1 per person and then get exploring! You’ll find lots of hidden animals along the way. Do you think you can beat your friends back to base in the quickest time?! These sessions run 3:30-4:30 on the last Tuesday of every month (April-October). Please meet at the Pavillion to collect your map. Visit www.xplorer.org.uk/home for more details.

From 25 April, you can join in on the new dementia health walks at Barnwell Country Park (PE8 5PB). Enjoy a walk around the park and informal chat and activities in the café afterwards. It’s a great chance to make new friends in a safe and supportive environment. They’ll be running every Wednesday 10am-12pm and cost £1 per person. Parking charges apply. Please wear suitable footwear.
