Staff and councillors are showing their support for people living with dementia this Dementia Awareness Week

Staff and councillors at East Northamptonshire Council are showing their support for people living with dementia by signing up to become a dementia friendly council this Dementia Awareness Week 15 – 21 May.

The Dementia Friends programme, an Alzheimer’s Society initiative, is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition.

Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, Steven North, says:

“Dementia is a major concern, with one in 14 people over 65 years of age living with dementia.

“Everyday tasks that we often take for granted can be daunting for people living with dementia. They often avoid shopping or visiting public places as they can feel anxious about the situations that they might face. To help, we are encouraging all of our staff  and councillors to become Dementia Friends to ensure that we’re able to provide understanding and help to those affected by the condition. A little patience and kindness can go a long way.”

Through videos and workshops, staff and councillors will find out more about dementia and how they can best support those affected.

Steven North adds:

“I believe that this scheme will make East Northamptonshire Council a more friendly environment for those with dementia to visit and that we can build on this success and extend our Dementia Friendly Community across the district. We're ideally placed to lead the way in recruiting volunteers and we hope this will encourage other local organisations to get on board too.”

Dementia Awareness Week 15 – 21 May will encourage people who are worried about dementia to confront their worries by addressing dementia directly and going to Alzheimer's Society for information and support.
