East Northamptonshire Council has a new chairman for 2014/15.

Councillor Gill Mercer, who is district councillor for the Rushden Pemberton Ward, took over from outgoing chairman, Pam Whiting at the Annual Meeting of the Council for the Civic Year on Wednesday, 14 May. Cllr Marika Hillson was also named as Vice-Chairman at this meeting.

Cllr Mercer has lived in Rushden since 1977 and has been a district councillor for 11 years. She is also a Rushden Town Councillor and is active in the local Twinning with towns in Germany.  She is Vice Chairman of Northamptonshire Groundwork Trust and a member of the Northamptonshire Parking Partnership.

Cllr Mercer is looking forward to showcasing the district and the work of the council at many events over the next 12 months with her consort and husband, Andy.

“I am looking forward to a rewarding year heading the council and promoting its name and, in addition, fundraising for my charity, Prostaid, a charity which helps sufferers of prostate cancer. Specifically, I am raising funds for a piece of diagnostic equipment for Kettering General Hospital.

“I hope to meet as many residents as possible at events and various functions throughout the year.”

You can support Cllr Mercer with her chosen charity by donating at or texting GMER51 £5 to 70070.

Events already planned for the year include a Golf Day on 11 September and a Queen Tribute band on 27 December at Rushden Bowls Club.
