Non dependent deductions

 Anyone who lives with you and is over 18 who is not your partner, dependent child, joint tenant or sub-tenant, is called a "non-dependent" and they are expected to help towards your rent. An amount is taken from your Housing Benefit - even if you do not get any money from them. The amount that is deducted depends upon the non-dependent's age and income.

Below shows the various amounts that may be deducted.

No deduction will be made if:

You or your partner:

  • Is blind or
  • In receipt of Attendance Allowance, care component of Disability Living Allowance or the daily living component of Persoanl INdependence Payments.

The non-dependent:

  • Is normally resident elsewhere or
  • Is a full time student or
  • Is in legal custody or
  • Has been in hospital for 52 weeks or more or
  • Is in receipt of work based training allowance
