The East Northamptonshire Greenway (the Greenway) makes attractive and safer walking and cycling routes available in the heart of the Nene Valley.
The Greenway is being developed in phases, some of which are already completed and others will follow within the next few years. The Greenway Vision map illustrates how it looks now and how it might look in the future.
The Greenway will help connect East Northamptonshire’s communities to a central route that will run from Wellingborough Railway Station in the south and to Peterborough railway station in the north and vice-versa.
It will link open spaces together with opportunities for informal recreation and alternative means of transport to services and facilities. The project will also provide safe routes for young people who walk and cycle to school.
The Greenway is predominantly for walkers and cyclists, and in parts horse riders are welcome where the route is a bridleway (Phase 5 and 6). There are routes such as Phase 7a which is for walkers only and cyclists are asked to dismount. We thank you in advance for understanding the situation.
The Greenway Forward Plan sets out how it will develop over the next few years. It is a vital tool for both the development and management of the Greenway and the work of the Greenway Board.
The document covers:
details of routes completed so far and what the costs were to build those phases and
future routes set out as phases with indicative costings, maintenance requirements and any special issues.
The plan illustrates how the Greenway links to other national organisations’ routes (e.g. Sustrans) and to other surrounding cycle route projects (e.g. The Welland Valley Cycleway), as well as providing information for local communities who wish to link their own projects to the Greenway.
It also illustrates how the Greenway supports countywide tourism and provides opportunities for the development of rural tourism businesses, in particular in the context with our Destination Nene Valley tourism project for the county.
Included are two supporting documents detailing feasilibity studies to extend and link the Greenway to across the district and beyond - Oundle to Peterborough Green Wheel Feasibility Report and Oundle to Weldon Feasibility Report.
Out to water, into history
‘Out to Water, Into History’ is a brand new project that will enhance the stretch of the East Northamptonshire Greenway from Rushden Lakes to Asda in the heart of Rushden.
Funded by the Heritage Lottery through the Nenescape Landscape Partnership Scheme, this five-year project will improve this section of the Greenway by providing a clear link, installing signposting, installing welcoming gateways, creating a ‘Friends of the Greenway’ group, implementing and delivering a landscape management plan and making it a nicer green corridor linking the new and old Rushden. Nenescape is delivering 16 other projects with several partner organisations along the River Nene between Northampton and Peterborough.
Phases 1-3 have now been completed.
Phase one involved constructing a walking and cycling route linking the towns of Higham Ferrers and Rushden. A new cycle route has been created along the old railway line from the High Street, Rushden to Crown Way. It makes use of the existing cycle-way from the High Street to Washbrook Road and provides a new tarmac cycle-way to Rushden Community College across Spencer Park.
Phase two included an extension to the route through the centre of Higham Ferrers. The work involved a number of changes along the High Street from Queensway to the junction with Wharf Road and along Saffron Lane.
Phase three saw the upgrade of the existing walking route from Higham Ferrers to Irthlingborough across Irthlingborough Lakes and Meadows Nature Reserve.
