WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment)

The Council provides a weekly WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) collection scheme.

What items are collected?

The service is for small household electrical items and includes:

  • Hairdryers, hair straighteners, shavers, electric toothbrushes
  • Kitchen appliances such as toasters, kettles, hand blenders
  • DVD/CD Players, radios, MP3 players and remote controls
  • Clocks, watches, calculators and torches
  • Kettles
  • Telephones, cameras
  • Laptops
  • Small electrical DIY tools such as drills and electric screwdrivers
  • Toys (remote control car or drone)
  • Chargers

Items should still have the cables attached and all batteries removed.

How are items collected?

Please leave any items for collection in a carrier bag by your wheeled bin on either your refuse or recycling collection day. These items will be loaded into a cage fitted to the regular collection vehicles.

How large can the items placed out for collection be?

Due to the size of the cage we are only able to take small household items, see list above for some examples of what can be taken. The carrier bag is a size indicator - it it fits in that it will fit fit in the vehicle's collection cage. The bag will be separated from the WEEE during the recycling process and disposed of accordingly.

Space in the cage is limited, so please do not save up items. If the cage is full, we may leave items and if this happens, please leave them again the following week.

What will happen to the items collected?

The WEEE will be taken to a facility for sorting. It will be shredded and metals removed by magnetic and electrical currents.

The plastics will be sorted into the different types by eddy current separator, near infra-red and other technologies. The sorted material will be sent for recycling.
