Empty properties

We need to know if there have been any changes to your circumstances. Otherwise, you may be paying the wrong rate. Please visit the Government website for more details.

All non-domestic properties in the Local Rating List are charged full rates if the property is occupied.

A property is classed as occupied if it contains stock or effects even if the business is not open for trading.

The person/s liable for payment of the non-domestic rate bill is the owner-occupier of the property or the current leaseholder.

If the property is empty the current leaseholder or owner will be liable for any rates due.

Empty properties

Business Rates will not be payable during the first 3 months that the majority of properties are empty. For empty industrial units (warehouses, factories etc.) the exempt period is 6 months.

After this period, full Business Rates are payable.

Full details can be found on the Government website.
