Calculate your benefit entitlement

How to calculate your benefit entitlement

When calculating the amount of Council Tax Support you may be entitled to, the following is taken into account:

  • The amount of money you have
  • The size of your family
  • Non-dependants (other people aged 18 or over who live with you)

The amount of discount you may be entitled to will vary from person to person depending on your circumstances.  These may include:

  • You and your partners age
  • Any disabilities that you or your partner may have
  • Any children for whom child benefit is payable.

Use the online benefit calculator to find out how much you may be entitled to.

Council Tax Support is worked out by comparing your income against figures provided by the government that reflects the basic needs of a household.

Once an assessment of your case has been done we will write to you and let you know if benefit has been awarded, how much it is and when it will apply from.

If you have applied for Council Tax Support and are entitled to it from the beginning of April, the amount of discount shown on your council tax bill is the total discount for the whole of the year.  This may change if your circumstances change during the year.

There is also help with rent and council tax available for pensioners and for people of working age.
