Disabled Facilities Grants

This grant is designed to enable a disabled person to continue living independently in their home. We are required by law to provide the statutory Disabled Facilities Grant to adapt homes for people with a disability if the adaptation is considered necessary, appropriate, practical and reasonable.

A range of works and adaptations are available but only when recommended by the Community Occupational Therapist. A test of financial resources using the criteria prescribed for Disabled Facilities Grants within the Housing Act 1996 will be applied to determine the amount of grant you are entitled to. Details of income, savings and investments will be required. If the adaptations are required for a child there is no means test. Applicants in receipt of any of the following benefits will not need to be means tested:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Employment Support Allowance
  • Income based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Guaranteed pension credit
  • Housing benefit
  • Working tax credit/child tax credit with assessed income less than £15,050
  • Universal credit

The maximum grant available is £30,000.

You can view our Private Sector Housing Grants Policy for further details.

To apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, a means test must first be carried out to determine whether a person is eligible for a grant. Once eligibility has been confirmed a referral to the Occupational Therapist will be made to determine what adaptations may be required.
