Rangers lead way on dog crackdown

Published on Thursday 29th July 2010

Stanwick Lakes Rangers are urging pet owners to keep their dogs on leads around the lakes to protect wildlife and keep play areas safe and clean.

Following a recent training session with East Northamptonshire Council on dog control orders, the rangers now have the power to issue dog owners with a Fixed Penalty Notice if they do not follow the park’s rules concerning keeping dogs on leads and clearing up after their pets.

Dave Mynors, Site Manager, said: "Stanwick Lakes is of international importance for its overwintering and breeding wildfowl. To preserve and improve the habitat as well as to minimise disturbance to the wildlife, it is imperative that dogs are kept under close control at all times. In addition to the dogs on lead policy, dogs are excluded from the water and children’s play area. The safety of the substantial number of visitors, including many young children, to the site is of paramount importance to Rockingham Forest Trust."

Kevin Skerry, Enforcement Officer at East Northamptonshire Council who carried out the training, added: "The rangers are committed to protecting the area and the wildlife within Stanwick Lakes and whilst they recognise the attraction for dog owners to visit the park, they ask that all dog owners act in a responsible way whilst there and keep their dogs on leads and out of the exclusion areas which are clearly signposted."
