Household waste

Household wasteEast Northamptonshire Council operates a sack based refuse collection service.  Collections are weekly. Please click on the link for your collection day.

Please place your refuse out for collection at the curtilage of your property by 7am.  The curtilage is where your property boundary or shared driveway meets the nearest public highway. If putting it out for 7am is difficult for you it is acceptable to place it out the evening before. Please do not place your refuse out earlier than the evening before as this can lead to a fixed penalty of up to £100.  Residents that repeatedly do this or refuse to pay the fixed penalty may be taken to court where the maximum penalty is £1000.

If you live in a household where no-one is able to take you refuse and recycling to the curtillage of your property you can register for an assisted collection and arrange for them to be collected from a place that is better for you.  For more information please see our assisted collection page.

Our refuse collection vehicles are not fitted with bin lifts, so wheeled bins are not emptied by our contractors as the crews would have to empty them by hand.  This is not acceptable for health and safety reasons.  If you use a wheeled bin to store your refuse you must remove the waste and place it, bagged, at the curtilage of your property for collection.

Items not collected through the rubbish collection

There are some things we will not collect through the ordinary refuse collection. These include:

  • Liquids - paints, oils (cooking or engine), solvents
  • Hazardous waste - asbestos, pesticides, chemicals, car batteries, unwanted medicines, televisions and monitors
  • Demolition and DIY waste - e.g. rubble, carpets, bathroom suites and kitchen units
  • Sharps - e.g. hypodermic needles. If you need us to collect used hypodermic needles (for example if you are diabetic), we offer a separate free clincial waste collection for this.
  • Glass and other sharp items such as knives and other blades can be collected but must be well wrapped and clearly marked in a securely taped up cardboard box.
  • Green waste/garden waste, we offer a separate collection for this, please follow the link to the Green Waste Club
  • Large household appliances, e.g. fridges, washing machines, cookers. Please follow the link to our Household Bulky Waste collection service
