Regional policies
The 2004 Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act introduced regional planning as a statutory part of the development plan system. This means that policies in the Regional Plan need to be taken into account when preparing or considering development schemes.
The current East Midlands Regional Plan was adopted in March 2009. This Plan will run till 2026, though work is already being undertaken by the regional planning body (East Midlands Regional Assembly) to take the Regional Plan forward to 2031.

National planning policies
Together with local and regional development policies in the North Northamptonshire Core Spatial Strategy (adopted June 2008) and East Midlands Regional Plan (adopted March 2009), national planning policies need to be taken into account when preparing or considering development schemes.
On 27th March 2012 the Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) published the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). This single document sets out the planning policies for England on a variety of topics ranging from housing to town centre development. This document replaces the Planning Policy Statements (PPS) and Planning Policy Guidance (PPG).
