Dog warden service

The role of East Northamptonshire Council's Dog Warden Service is to promote responsible dog ownership and enforce dog control order legislation where possible.

The council not only deals with complaints but can provide advice on a range of issues including barking dogs, stray dogs, dangerous dogs, dog fouling and the enforcement of dog control orders.

Please use the dog waste bins that have been provided. Authorised officers can patrol parks and open spaces and specific areas where dog fouling has been reported. You can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 if you do not clean up after your dog.

Dog control orders are the legislation used by the council to enforce most responsible dog ownership issues. These were introduced in 2009 as part of The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.

A dog control order can be applied to any land, which is open to the air (on at least one side and that remains open to the air at all times) that the public are entitled to have access to.

East Northamptonshire Council has implemented four dog control orders, these are:

• Failing to remove dog faeces
• Not keeping a dog on a lead (this only applies to specific designated areas)
• Not putting, and keeping, a dog on a lead when directed to do so by an authorised officer
• Allowing a dog onto land from which dogs are excluded
